Publications and Position Statements
- Produced Web-based document entitled "NBNA News Special Report on Aging" [pdf] in 2006
- Publish two newsletters dedicated to aging in 2004 and 2005 to be distributed to 5,000 practicing nurses, student nurses, and other health care professionals
- Solicit articles on aging to be published in the Journal of National Black Nurses Association, a peer-reviewed, research-based, and refereed journal
Presentations, Workshops, and Seminars
- Held a 2002 regional conference that included a full day of educational programs on aging and care of elderly persons and offered continuing education units to attendees
- Dedicated the 2004 NBNA conference to aging with the theme "Research-based Evidence for Successful Aging," including continuing education sessions on disease prevention and promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the life span
- Hosted workshops on end of life care at the 2002 and 2003 NBNA annual conferences
- Hosted a health fair at the 2003 NBNA annual conference, offering health care screenings for hypertension, blood sugar, and cholesterol to 200-250 seniors
- Initiate an Aging Forum at the 2004 NBNA annual conference to serve as a structure that will enable the continuation of aging activities within NBNA
- Hold in-service or CEU workshops on geriatric health care at the various NBNA chapters as an on-going effort to augment existing activities with the elderly, such as the adult immunizations
- Collaborate with strategic partners 100 Black Men of America and the International Black Firefighters to hold two regional conferences in 2005 that address health concerns directly impacting African American men as they age, such as hypertension, diabetes, and prostate cancer
- NBNA to hold aging forum at the 2005 NBNA Conference
- NBNA to hold continuing education workshop on geriatric health care and end of life at the 2005 NBNA Conference, Friday, July 22, 2005
Special Interest Groups
- NBNA aging interest group established in 2005. Initial teleconference call held in February 2005; a series of teleconferences will focus of the role of nurses in geriatrics, pain management, and elderly addictions
Awards
- NBNA presented "Award on Geriatric Nursing" to Renee Roosa at the 2004 Annual Institute and Conference
