American Nurses Association-Specialty Nursing Association Partners in Geriatrics (ANA-SNAPGs)
NCA has heightened awareness among specialty nurses of the unique needs of older adults to ensure that all specialty nursing associations incorporate care of the aging population into their associations on an ongoing and permanent basis.
Specialty nursing associations became ANA-SNAPGs (American Nurses Association-Specialty Nursing Association Partners in Geriatrics) by receiving Planning Grants and 2-Year Implementation Grants.
Planning Grant
Planning Grant funds were intended to assist specialty nursing associations in developing a strategy to implement geriatric activities within the organization. Grantees were expected to build upon an existing strategic plan in the area of geriatrics, or initiate a plan for the first time.
2-Year Implementation Grants
Two-year Implementation Grant funds were intended to assist specialty nursing associations with moving forward from their current level of geriatric activity to enhance the education of nurse members in caring for older adults.
Examples of Implementation Grant activities have included:
- Creating a permanent geriatric structure within the organization (geriatric special interest group, task force, work group, etc.) dedicated to care of older adults
- Appointing a Board liaison to the geriatric special interest group
- Including care of older adults in association mission/strategic plan
- Incorporating geriatrics into association scopes and standards
- Creating/revising core geriatric materials to address care of older adults in the specialty practice
- Developing geriatric competencies
- Generating and disseminating position papers related to care of older adults and the specialty practice
- Encouraging ANCC gerontological nursing certification examination in addition to the association's specialty certification
- Publishing geriatric content in association journals, newsletters/e-newsletters
- Offering geriatric-related pre-conferences and workshops at annual meetings
- Offering a Nurse Competence in Aging Award to a member(s) of the association
- Fostering strategic partnerships with interdisciplinary specialty associations
